Cell Phones For Pre-Teens?

This is a question on many parents minds. Do they really need a cell phone? Just ask the outlets that sell them. They think that every child, regardless of age, should carry one. That it is a mandatory accessory for everyone to have. However most parents see it a little differently when trying to make a decision if their child should have one as well.

Considering the nuisance value of cell phones, the Department of Education put a restriction on the children carrying cell phones to school in New York recently. The parents were more upset by it than the children. They held demonstrations to express their views why they considered it necessary for their children to carry cell phones. It helps them make immediate contact with their parents.

Gone are the days when cell phones were used for emergency purposes only. They have almost completely replaced regular landlines. However, only parents can decide whether their kids need a phone or not.

You do need to understand how cell phones are used. They are not just used to make calls. Many are very advanced communications devices. You can take photos, play music on them, send text messages to other people, they really are not as much phones as small portable computers.

And while your pre-teen may feel that they need all these features, do they really at their age? Probably they just need a true emergency phone to use in very specific times. Judge this by seeing how they react to your suggestion to this effect and see if they truly do want it only for emergencies or for something else.

If you are planning to buy a cell phone for your preteen, look for affordable plans and preferably those on which you can control the usage. The market is flooded with all sorts of deals. So do some research and buy a cell phone that is cost-effective. At this stage it is best to go in for the basic model with minimum features so that the cell phone itself restricts the usage to emergency only.

Don't let others tell you what to do. This is your child, and your decision to make. You may, however, find yourself getting flack from your preteen if you have a cell phone and tell them they can't have one.
