I simply adore chocolate for many years I have spoilt myself and eaten it often. Unfortunately, during this period, I have been rather unwell and used my poor health as excuse to say to myself "go ahead spoil yourself" far too many times and I find myself just a little overweight. However it is not just my weight that is alarming as a friend recently suggested that my illness may actually be a chocolate allergy.
After only a few minutes of searching for information about chocolate allergy on the Internet, I could see that a true allergy to chocolate is something of a rarity. The more likely explanation of symptoms would be an allergy (or allergies) to one or more of the other ingredients in my chocolate bar.
If it was discovered that you were actually suffering from what we commonly refer to as a chocolate allergy, you would, in actuality, be suffering from an allergy to cocoa. Accounting for about 65%, or more, of the ingredients of an average chocolate bar, cocoa is the substance that give the bar it's wonderful flavor and color.
Obviously cocoa is therefore found in any foodstuff which contains chocolate and if you suffer from a cocoa allergy you will have no option but to exclude all such products from your diet. You will always have to remember to check the labels of processed foods such as cakes and biscuits to make sure that cocoa is not listed in the ingredients.
Although a chocolate allergy is unlikely to kill you the common symptoms experienced can be very unpleasant and rather alarming. Headaches are closely associated with this problem and other symptoms include an element of confusion or the lack of ability to think clearly. Further common associated symptoms are heartburn/acid reflux, hives and skin rashes, rectal itching and, possibly the most worrying symptoms of breathing difficulties plus the vision can also be effected. Not a pleasant mix at all.
specialist. This specialist will test your bodies reaction to a selection of common allergens including cocoa. As it is common for people to suffer from more than one allergy this will ensure that he determines which substances are causing your unpleasant symptoms.
When the culprit has been discovered you will receive the suitable help and advice. You will be given treatments such as creams lotions and drugs to help clear up the symptoms and help minimize them in future. Some drugs can prove so effective that it is sometimes possible to treat yourself now and then with a little chocolate but maybe it would be best to abstain altogether.
While many despair at the thought of chocolate allergy and the need to remove chocolate from their diet many have a more positive outlook. One of the wonderful things about such an allergy is that you will very quickly notice how much better you feel. Many people choose to take a look at their overall lifestyle and continue to make changes to their diets to include far healthier foods. Any further health improvements just encourage the folk all the more so why not give it a try yourself?
