The exact cause for prostate cancer is unknown but there are several risk factors which can be observed. Some of these factors are a high fat diet or heritage of example.
In order to avoid prostate cancer and to get treatment as early as possible it is not enough to watch out for prostate cancer symptoms. One you detect the symptoms, the cancer is already in an advanced stage. Therefore you must visit your doctor at fixed intervals even before you discover any symptoms.
After the cancer has broken out already, you could have symptoms like weak or interrupted urine flow, blood in the urine or a pain in the back, thighs or hips. There could also be a burning sensation.
Prostate cancer can be cured but it is vital to detect the cancer in a very early stage. Once the cancer spreads it is getting more and more difficult to get rid of it. If treatment starts early, prognosis is very good.
The doctor will also put his digit into the rectum to feel any lumps in the prostate. If he finds any abnormalities, the doctor will order an blood test to find out if a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is in the blood. While low amounts of PSA are ok, a high amount of PSA is a strong sign for cancer.
Another test is the transrectal ultrasound which shows a pretty accurate picture of the prostate gland. This painless procedure can detect tumors within twenty minutes.
If the tests above are positive in any form, a prostate biopsy is necessary to confirm the results. A small piece of the tissue is removed by using a needle. If there are any cancer cells then they will show up under the microscope. The biopsy is still the most accurate way to diagnose prostate cancer. It goes quickly and doesn't hurt too much.
Once the cancer is detected, the doctor must find out how much it has spread already. An x-ray can show if the cancer has reached the lungs already. A computer tomography or magnetic resonance imaging can also make internal organs visible.
The treatment must start quickly and is often done by more than one doctor. An oncologist, a surgeon and a urologist are needed to start treatment. The standard treatment is a surgery because it gives the chance to completely remove the entire cancer. There are alternative treatment options as well which you may consider, especially because the surgery can have some serious side effects.
Prognosis for early caner treatment is good. Over 95% of men are alive after five years. A later detection for the cancer which has spread already in other areas of the body still has a prognosis of 30% survival rate after 5 years.
