As 4 out of 5 American people suffer from the painful affliction of hemorrhoids, it may be helpful to know what causes hemorrhoids. You may also be interested in just what hemorrhoids are. Simply put, hemorrhoids (also called piles) are veins in your rectum which have become enlarged and are quite painful.
Hemorrhoids start from 2 different areas. There are the internal veins which become swollen and form what is called internal hemorrhoids. As these are internal, they are not seen or felt, unless they become severe. External veins can also swell to develop into external hemorrhoids. These are seen around the outside of the anus and are felt quite often.
Not a pleasant scenario, is it? But why does this happen? Do you consistently have a hard time having bowel movements and have to 'force' them out? The most common of hemorrhoid causes happens to be constipation. Constantly straining on the toilet puts strain on the walls of your intestines, and the intestinal wall veins swell up and become hemorrhoids.
Pregnancy is a big cause of hemorrhoids for women as well, because constipation occurs frequently during pregnancy. In addition, women experience increased pressure due to the baby's weight on their body, and this unfortunate combination can cause a hemorrhoid problem. In fact, many pregnant women feel that the pain and discomfort of hemorrhoids surpasses the feeling of morning sickness.
Other causes of hemorrhoids include:
- Don't sit for too long without getting up/walking around for a few minutes after every hour or so of sitting
- Standing for a long period of time
- Reading while sitting on the toilet, which breaks your concentration and causes you to sit longer than you need to
- Not getting enough fiber and water into your diet, both of which help lubricate the bowel movements and make them softer and easier to pass
Also, overweight people have a greater chance of getting a hemorrhoid affliction. And anyone with a family history of hemorrhoids has an increased risk, too.
