Founded in 1937 by Bausch & Lomb, Ray-Ban sunglasses are the world's best selling sunglasses. They were initially made for lieutenant John MacCready who asked them to make a pair of sunglasses that would protect his eyes from the sun but with a great look.

Pilots in the United States Air Force began to wear the sunglasses and when General Douglas strode on to a beach in the Philippines in World War II wearing Ray-Ban, the sunglasses became a massive hit back home in the USA. Since then, Ray-Ban Sunglasses have been worn in hundreds of Hollywood films and remains a favorite among celebrities.

Classic Ray-Ban - the Wayfarer and the Avaitor

The two most famous sunglasses style in the world are the Aviator and Wayfarer. They also happen to Ray-Ban.

Naval aviators found that the Aviator sunglasses not only look great but also served a necessary function. The white marks below their eyes caused by the goggles that they wore were covered by the over sized glasses and also allow enough sun light through the tan the marks themselves. A cigarette could also be held in place by the bar across the nose.

The glasses are designed to cover the entire eye and to stop sunlight from reaching the eye from between the glasses and the face.

In 1952, sunglass designer Raymond Stegeman invented the Wayfarer for Baush and Lomb. The first pair of eyewear to use plastic, it was a radical new look.

Originally marketed to pilots, they were quickly found to be popular among female Hollywood stars, such as Kim Novak and Marilyn Munroe. Audrey Hepburn wore a pair of Wayfarers in the movie, "Breakfast at Tiffany's".
