People thought rap music was just a fad. Than with it still stuck around, people started paying a little more attention. This is when people started realizing that their is more to rap music than just a beat and some angry black guy screaming his lungs off. People started paying attention and more so to the lyrics. This is when grandmaster flash, Rakim and all the real old school guys started coming into the scene.
No one in hip hop history especially the artist ever wanted to be a gangster rapper or labeled as one but the media really had the time of their lives talking about it. They made sure that all the negativity that was going on in America especially within the black youth should be blamed on nothing but rap music. Not realizing that rap music was nothing short of or simply just a reflection of the situation of the black youth. However, rap music became such a powerful force that it invaded all the suburbs and pretty much touched all the youth in America regardless their race or gender.
No one could put a lid on this genre of music anymore. When rock music first came out, it was labeled the devil's music and soon every kid wanted to hear it and have a great time with it. Same kind of scrutiny and negativity was thrown at Hip hop and rap music. Some of these rappers were actually called criminals and law breakers in the open and the media just didn't care. The more you bashed rap music, the more money the media made.
They took over the USA while they were alive but in death they took over the entire globe. The names I'm obviously talking about are 2pac and Biggie. 2pac was from the west coast, Biggie from the east, and both were dubbed 'gangster rappers' by the media. Not knowing, that label only made them cooler and more out there.
People have been saying that same thing about hip hop since it started and this criticism isn't going away any time soon. What I can guarantee though is their is another artist who is on his way who is going to take hip hop to the next level. Yes Lil Wayne is doing his thing but at the same time their someone out there, I can feel it who is going to take it all to the next level.
