For the past 200 years, hypnosis has been studied by scientists from around the world. It is believed that hypnosis has been used in one form or another dating back to ancient Egyptian and Greek days, however, the majority of studies have been performed from 1950 to around 1980. Even with proof of benefits, hypnosis continues for some to be a controversial subject. The problem with hypnosis is the fact that you could see "hypnotists" perform on stage for a giggle and laugh, making people chuckle and jumping around like chickens. This has disabled hypnosis from being taken too seriously.
Further aspects of hypnosis controversy is the fact that people have no idea of the history and evolution of the techinques used. Doctors and practitioners have been using hypnosis well before the 19th century, but it wasn't until doctor James Braid developed a special technique that it took off. Baird had the ability of putting his patients into an altered state, performing surgery without any anesthesia, and leaving the patient feeling no pain. Over the years, people's views of hypnosis have softened but even today, we see some people thinking it is all a mind game.
One of these publications can be found in 1996 by Auerbach and this statement mentioned that "Although there has been extensive research done on hypnosis, a discrete hypnotic state has not been found to exist". This means that it's hard to "prove" there's any real "hypnotic state" and it also suggest that different people respond differently to different commadns and suggestions. This results in hypnosis being viewed as "imaginary or hopeful".
You've seen in Hollywood movies and in stage hypnosis shows that a person can do things that he normally wouldn't consider doing, thus the controversy behind hypnosis is falsified once more. You do not lose control of mind and body like most people suggest. What we can confirm is that being put into the state of mind of hypnosis in no way makes a person demonstrate anything that would violate his or her ethical, moral, or religious beliefs.
The reason that people are put into hypnotic states is because they allow themselves to believe whatever the suggestions suggests, then most people usually do. Most people who achieve a hypnotic state are aware of everything in their surroundings and can remeber all events. Most people think that there's something magical or healing, or even "hookey" about hypnosis... this is just not true, there's nothing magical or supernatural about it at all..
There's the other side of the spectrum where people believe that hypnosis is demonic, or an evil penomenon taking cotnrol and unleashing some evil spirits. Hypnosis is a state of highly peaceful and focused counscious awareness in which you can manifest life events in a more direct manner. In fact hypnosis often increases the bodies awareness to oneself which allows them to connect to their bodies better, which usually results in individuals making good decisions and feeling great about their lifes.
Another thing many belive is that you can only hypnotise a certain type of person. This is not true, since it goes back to the varied states of consiousness and how differente people react differently to states. Truth be told, you can almost guarantee that anyone can be hypnotised, but they will never have the same experience. Some people will be in what they call waking hypnosis, which is when the analytical mind is bypassed while other people allow themselves to drift deeper into sleep. Therefore, it is true that some people are difficult to hypnotize but the belief that only a certain type of person can be hypnotized is simply not true.
More often than not, controversy surrounding hypnosis has a lot to do with history. Once again, because of the subjective nature of hypnosis, it's challenging to describe it in concrete terms. You may also want to understand that in most early years, doctors thought that hypnosis was a cure to a problem, but today we realize it's more commonly used to achieve and reach our individual goals. Therefore, when used as a means for reaching the subconscious mind to help someone lose weight or stop smoking, hypnosis works.
Look at the air we breathe. We know it is there, yet we cannot see it or touch it. The same is true with gravity. We know it exists because of how it manifests yet no one is really, capable of describing what it is. Hypnosis is the same - we know it has many wonderful benefits but we also know that with its subjective nature, there will always be those that simply do not believe.
