What is LASIK? LASIK is a surgical procedure using a laser, doctor and computer guided, to repair vision. If you decide to look into it, this is what you can expect.
The first step is to check with an eye doctor to see if you qualify for this type of surgery. There are some things that will hurt your chances. One example is if your eyes are unstable. You need consistent vision.
Eye diseases will also hurt your chances of using a LASIK procedure. If you have had an eye injury, this could also be a problem.
You need to do some things to prepare. If you wear contacts you need to stop using them for some time before the surgery. This is necessary because contacts affect the shape of the cornea.
Infection must be avoided. The day before the surgery you need to stop using all creams, lotions, makeup etc. These things can find their way into your eyes and cause problems.
This operation is done as an outpatient procedure. It takes less than an hour to complete, closer to thirty minutes. You will need someone to drive you home after the surgery. You will be medicated and could have blurred vision as well.
You will need to fix your eye on a light during the procedure. The ability to do this is required for the procedure. If you aren't able to focus on the light for one minute, you won't be allowed to have LASIK surgery.
Once your eye is fixed on this point the laser will be turned on. Then the laser will remove corneal tissue to correct the shape of the eve. A computer has been programmed to control the laser to vaporize the desired tissue.
When the surgery is over you will need to protect your eyes from bumping or rubbing for a few days. This is to give the flap that was created time to heal.
Hard contact activities should be avoided for a few weeks. This would include, football or boxing, anything that could jolt the eye. Keeping the lotions, creams, and makeup off for a few days will help prevent any infections.
Many people have had spectacular results with LASIK. People that couldn't see well at all have achieved 20/20 vision. Although this is a relative new field, the results appear permanent.
