Is sleep deprivation a problem that plagues your evenings? Reports have shown that over the past forty years, adults sleep at least two hours less than they used to. In that same forty-year span of time, the obesity epidemic has escalated from one in nine Americans to one in three!
This problem is not just about American adults. A recent study was conducted at the University of British Columbia and showed grim results. Adults that sleep less than seven hours a night are significantly more likely to be obese. This study was conducted on adults between the ages of 32 and 49.
Two hormones, leptin and ghrelin, are responsible for these alarming statistics in sleep deprivation studies. Let's take a closer look.
Your energy intake and your energy expenditure are both regulated by leptin. Its primary purpose is to tell the brain when you've eaten enough.
The main function of ghrelin is to trigger your hunger. It let's your body know when it's time to eat. Ghrelin levels are high prior to feasting and lower afterwards.
How is sleep deprivation affected by these two hormones? When your body is deprived of adequate sleep, it produces more ghrelin, which is the appetite stimulator, but less leptin, which is the appetite depressant! In 2004, a study conducted at The University of Chicago demonstrated alarming results. Participants, who slept only four hours a night for two nights in a row, had an increase in their ghrelin levels by 28% and a decrease in their leptin levels by 18%!
This study clearly shows that individuals who suffer from sleep deprivation for even short periods of time also suffer from increased appetites. As if that weren't devastating enough, they also have disabled their body's natural "stop" mechanism.
Sleep deprivation has long been known to adversely affect our health and increase our risk in areas such as heart disease, certain types of cancer, and diabetes. Now, we also know that getting as little as 6-7 hours of sleep a night is detrimental to our health in ways that may be far more dangerous.
